WEIRDO MISSION

The so-called Weirdos are people like us, but facing different sets of situations and difficulties, such as immigrant mothers, people with appearance anxieties, and social entrepreneurs promoting women's rights in Nepal. “Weirdo Mission” FIDS Lesson Plans are documentary-based templates that use FIDS as a pedagogical tool to spark agency and character-building. Aligned with academic goals and real-world challenges, they help teachers foster contextual, values-driven learning while building empathy, creativity, and collaboration. These lessons empower students to lead change beyond textbooks and classrooms.

    The Design Thinking Framework

  • STEP 1

    FEEL

Curriculum Constraints: Teachers felt restricted by textbook-focused instructions and content.

Need for Relevance: They sought ways to make learning more meaningful, real-world, and values-based.

Desire for Purpose: They wanted to infuse lessons with purpose, empathy, and student voice.

Emotional Connection: They looked for approaches that made learning personally meaningful and emotionally engaging.

Lack of Inspirational Materials: Teachers struggled to find engaging, age-appropriate content that helped students connect with complex, real-world issues and develop empathy during the Feel stage.

  • STEP 2

    IMAGINE

    What if ...

teaching began not with the textbook, but with the learner? What if every lesson asked why it mattered and how it connected to the world beyond the classroom? Imagine classrooms where learning is not just content to cover but a journey driven by purpose, empathy, and relevance.

  • STEP 3

    DO

FIDS as the Learning Journey: Lessons follow the Feel–Imagine–Do–Share cycle, guiding students from empathy to ideation, action, and reflection. Mini-documentary stories serve as a “Feel” trigger for students to empathize and explore real social issues, such as LGBTQ+ rights, cultural norms, or scientific curiosity.

Mini-documentaries as Emotional Entry Points: Each lesson begins with a real-life story of a so-called “weirdo,” someone who defies norms and drives change, sparking emotional connection and curiosity.

Story-driven and Values-based Learning: Rooted in compelling real-life narratives, such as immigrant mothers or unconventional scientists, the lessons spark personal reflection, social awareness, and moral reasoning.

Blending Academics and Values: Activities integrate critical thinking, communication, and creativity while building empathy, inclusion, and agency.

Culturally Adapted, Globally Relevant: Lessons are grounded in Taiwanese contexts but address universal themes, adaptable across cultures.

Student-Led Action: Learners take simple, meaningful actions and share them publicly promoting agency, compassion, and confidence, transforming learning into visible, real-world impact.
